San Marcos High School football suffered its fifth straight loss of the 2010 season 41-14 on Friday to the undefeated Austin Anderson High School Trojans (5-0). Anderson was just too much when matched up against an undersized Rattler football team (0-5) and really took control of the game early.
Freshman quarterback Zack Sterling made his first career start on varsity for the Rattlers and was introduced to Texas high school football quickly when facing the hard hitting Trojan defense. Anderson really managed the clock well in the second quarter after being up 7-0, and they marched 85 yards for a touchdown with just a couple minutes left to go before halftime. Another dismal effort on offense from the Rattlers on their next possession forced a punt back to the Trojans, who scored another touchdown using the hurry-up style offense just before the half.
Although down 21-0 at that time, the Rattler confidence was still high coming out to the second half. The San Marcos offense failed to gain yards again and they found themselves making mistakes in many aspects of the game, including special teams. Anderson was up 34-0 after three quarters of play when the Rattlers finally managed to put some points on the board. Junior running back Ryan Marin scored on a run from inside the red zone at the start of the fourth quarter to make the score 34-7. After another Trojan touchdown, San Marcos made a drive down the field to close out the game with a touchdown by UTSA-bound running back Terrance Wilburn.
The Rattlers start district play this week at New Braunfels after a winless non-district effort. Although the Rattlers are winless, one positive thing to look at is that every other team in district 24-5A is winless in district play right now as well. For a team that has not won a single game this season, San Marcos consistently plays hard and the players and coaches are constantly giving their full effort and maintaining an extremely positive attitude. Coach Steve Van Nest seems to have won over his players despite the slow start, and if the Rattlers can be tougher mentally and cut down on the turnovers, they have a chance to start off district with a win against New Braunfels on Friday.
