The San Marcos Rattlers football team dropped their record to 0-4 with a loss to Corpus Christi Carroll last Friday night. Coach Van Nest and the Rattler's football players were attempting to prove all the Snake doubters wrong, but still coming up short, the performance Friday night just added fuel to their fire.
CC Carroll came in and completely overmatched the Snakes at every position. Pushing the Rattlers undersized line on both sides of the ball, giving up large runs and even larger pass plays, are all grandiose ways that CC Carroll showed its dominance. The Snakes also fumbled the ball four times in the first quarter alone, losing three of them that resulted in Tiger touchdowns, making it easier on the opponent.
The Tigers were also coming off consecutive losses but played like a team possessed. The Tigers scored on every single drive in the first half, and essentially ending the game in the first quarter. The Snakes forced only one three-and-out drive, but it was late in the game when most of the starters where on the bench. In addition to this offensive assault – and to add salt to the wound – it was a freshman at quarterback for the Tigers.
After every big loss you always try to pick out the positives and the negatives but unfortunately the only positive I can see was that the Rattlers did manage to score one touchdown. The negatives were everywhere, mainly ball control. Three turnovers in the first quarter alone doomed the Snakes. Another big one was coverage. The team seems to be too slow for man-to-man and not well-coached enough for zone assignments.
At the end of the day, the snakes need to get back to fundamentals and quit turning the ball over and quit blowing coverages.
