Rattlers Trampled by Unicorns

The 0-5 San Marcos Rattlers football team took on New Braunfels High School (2-3) Friday night, losing to the Unicorns 56-14. The NB crowd was in full force for their homecoming game, as the Unicorns were coming off a heartbreaking loss to Austin powerhouse Westlake while San Marcos was looking for its first win of the season.

Before the game started, it didn’t look good for the Rattlers. The San Marcos starting quarterback was sidelined because of academic troubles, which left freshman Zach Sterling as the starter. Sterling made his first career start last Friday when the Rattlers lost to Austin-Anderson in a one-sided defeat.

The Rattlers had a very rough start, fumbling the ball on the first play of each of their first three positions. The turnovers lead to a 28-0 start for the Unicorns, and they didn’t let up. New Braunfels was able to shut out the Rattlers in the first half, leading 42-0 by the end of the second quarter.

Once you thought it couldn’t get any worse… it did. Arguably San Marcos' best player, running back Terrance Wilburn, was ejected from the game at the end of the second quarter after he was flagged for a personal after getting stuffed on a run down the sidelines. San Marcos only amassed 90 yards rushing, with a total of 165 yards on offense.

A very scary moment happened in the third quarter when Rattlers linebacker/running back Robert Spears was tackled after a screen pass to the left. Spears was carted off by an ambulance in a stretcher.

Light didn’t shine on the Rattlers until the fourth quarter when they were able punch in a late touchdown run to make the score 56-7. By the end of the game, the Unicorns had most of their backups on the field, which opened the door for Sterling to get one last score with a 31-yard touchdown pass to C.J. Gutierrez with 52 seconds remaining.

The Unicorns racked up 365 yards in total offense to win their first district game.

San Marcos (0-6) is back in action at home this Friday when they take on San Antonio Wagner.
