Bobcats Win Series Against Second Place Northwestern State

Eager to score a second victory over Northwestern this Saturday, the Texas State baseball team earned a 7-3 win. The Demons started one of their top pitchers, junior, Luke Irvine, who this past week was named hitter of the week in the Southland Conference. Facing him was Texas State's Michael Russo, who pitched a little over five innings, allowing eight hits and three runs.

Northwestern State started the game with a rally, as Demon left fielder Eric DeBlanc hit a grounder for a single. Center fielder Oscar Garcia delivered the RBI to score DeBlanc, giving the Demons the lead early. The Bobcats fought back in the bottom of the second as left fielder Shaun Garcia hit a drive to center field for a stand up double, bringing home Jeff McVaney to tie the ballgame.

Both teams held two scoreless innings, and took off in the fifth.Sophomore Demon Colin Bear hit a solo home run giving Northwestern their second lead as Russo was replaced by senior, Fielding Pittman. Northwestern State followed Texas State's strategy and switched their pitchers. Irvine was yanked in favor of a senior, Heath Hennigan. The Bobcats did not let the change affect them as Jason Martinson, Kyle Livingstone, and Kyle Kubitza hit three consecutive singles. Kubitza and Garcia earned Texas State two RBIs, helping the 'Cats take a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth.

Texas State dominated in the bottom of the seventh, keeping the visiting Demons scoreless for the last three innings. Garret Carruth came in to relieve Pittman, as Demon pitcher Dustin Northcot did the same for Hennigan. RBI hits from catcher Jordan Kopycinski, right fielder Laurn Randell, and center fielder Bret Atwood, gave the Bobcats a solid four run lead.

With the win, the Bobcats improve to 24-13, 15-5 SLC while NSU falls to 25-14, 12-7 SLC. The two teams will face off in Game 3 on Sunday at 1 pm, that game can be heard at txstatebobcats.com.
