The Texas State baseball team faced the Number 30 Northwestwern Demons to start off their weekend series Friday night. They came out on top by beating the Demons 5 to 3.
Sophomore pitcher Carson Smith started the Bobcats off with two scoreless innings, retiring four Demons with four strikeouts. The Bobcats had a rough start as well, as their batters suffered four scoreless innings. It wasn't until the top of the third that the fireworks really got started. Northwestern State took their first lead when a single shot over second baseman Christian Gallegos, gave the Demons their first run. NSU pitcher Ryan Zimmerman walked two Bobcats in the bottom of the inning, but it wasn't enough for them to score.
A single home run from Northwestern's third baseman, Chase Lyles, gave them a two run lead in the top of the fourth. Bobcat fans sat anxiously, awaiting the turnout for the next few innings. However, the Bobcats came through as expected in the fifth inning Bobcat catcher Andrew Stumph lined out to center field, giving him a double to start the rally. Gallegos was hit by a wild pitch, giving right fielder Laurn Randell two runners on base to work with. After two pitches, Randell found his pitch and doubled it to right field, scoring Stumph and Gallegos. This brought the score to 3-2, Demons.
In the sixth inning with Bobcats trailing by a run, McVaney hit a single to drive in Jason Martinson to tie the game at 3-3. Smith, meanwhile, kept the Demons at bay with a total of ten strikeouts throughout the entire game. The Bobcats, determined to take the lead, earned two runs in the bottom of the seventh from Randell and Kyle Livingstone. Smith was kept in for the rest of the game, striking out three Demons, to keep the Bobcats' lead and earn them the first win of the series.
