Women's Tennis Picks Up Second Win
The Texas State Women’s tennis team got another win on Sunday. The Bobcats defeated the Southeastern Louisiana Lady Lions 5-2 to improve their record to 2-0 in conference play. Their first conference win came against Nicholls yesterday.
The Bobcats came out early sweeping all three of the doubles matches. Coach Tory Plunkett, after losing some senior talent last year, has put a lot of pressure on three freshman players. The Bobcats have unique lineup of three newcomers and three veterans. In the doubles matches Coach Plunkett paired her star Andrea Giraldo with Melissa Hadad, a freshman, and they proved why they are the number 1 and 2 contenders in the lineup. They made quick work of their opponents. The senior Team of Peele and Kruse also showed their veteran ability, making quick work of their opponents as well. However, the team that was very impressive was the freshman combo of Mariana Perez and Gabriela Rojas as they literally overpowered their opponents 8-2.
When it came to the singles matches the Lions put up one heck of a fight. Rojas and Perez went down big early, 4-2 and 4-0. Perez lost her match 2-0 in straight sets, as the SLU opponent just overpowered the freshman. Rojas went down and continued to battle, but just could not get it done. However, senior Kiki Kruse got the win in her match very fast. She only lost 3 games in 2 sets, giving her the victory. Hadad and Giraldo had a rough time as the Lions were not going down without a fight, but the Bobcats were able to get the victory in the end. Peele also had to battle, but she to got the job done. The Bobcats are looking to keep their undefeated conference record when they travel to Corpus Christi on March 6th to take on The islanders. They will then come back north and take on UTSA the following Sunday.
