Travis Jones On Fire in Conference Opener; Demons Not so Much

Northwestern State men's basketball opened up their Southland Conference slate on the road in San Marcos to face the Texas State Bobcats Saturday afternoon, but its 3/22 mark from three-point range led the the Bobcats to a 84-71 win.

As they threw up bricks from downtown, the Bobcats could not miss, especially Travis Jones and Uriel Segura. The game started off as anticipated, with both teams running up and down the court and turning the ball over because of their fast-paced offenses. Then the bench came along, and they were more than ready to take over. Segura came out and drained two three’s, one from the parking lot... but he wasn’t the only one. Jones backdoored Segura and knocked a few threes himself in the first half.

At intermission, Jones was 3/3 from deep and Segura was 2/2, as the rest of the team was 1-of-4. Northwestern State on the other hand was a whopping 0/12 from three-point land. However, their nine offensive rebounds and Texas State’s 12 first-half turnovers kept the deficit pretty respectable at 42-30 in the Bobcats’ favor. Demon center William Mosley, who had eleven blocks in the team’s last game, owned the paint once again with his five first period blocks.

Second-half action started off much like the first. Both teams were a little too anxious, but the 'Cats' strong defense forced the Demons to shy away from the paint and continue to throw up bricks from deep. Northwestern State went 0/13 before Devon Baker eventually knocked one down at the 16:00 mark. The Demons would eventually get the lead down to as low as five points, but strong shooting by Jones and equal post-play by Senior Forward Cameron Johnson was too much to handle. The Bobcats stretched their lead to as much as 22 with just over two minutes left in the game, so head coach Doug Davalos called off the dogs, and a few jump shots late made it an 84-71 final score.

Jones finished 5/5 from distance for 17 points, and Johnson concluded with 19 and seven rebounds. Eddie Rios also knocked down a couple threes of his own to give him 12 points and five assists, as Segura and J.B. Conley both ended up with ten a piece.

The 'Cats take a week off before they travel to Lake Charles, Louisiana, next Saturday to play the McNeese State Cowboys. Tip off is set for 3:00 p.m. and KTSW will have pregame coverage starting at 2:45 on 89.9 and ktsw.net.
