San Marcos High School football ended its season on Friday night with a loss to the District 25-5A champions Cibolo Steele 49-7 at Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Stadium. This is the first time since 1995 that the Rattlers have gone without winning a single game in a season.
It was a very dominant performance by the Knights from the beginning of the game until the final whistle. The flood gates of scoring opened up on the second possession of the game when Knights quarterback Tommy Armstrong connected with his wide receiver, Matthew Mayle, for a 20-yard pass and score. Star running back and University of Texas signee, Malcolm Brown, saw very limited time and only touched the ball four times with one score, as he was not needed much.
The first quarter was an absolute disaster for the Rattlers when they turned the ball over twice and could not connect on a fake punt on fourth down. Steele capitalized on every San Marcos mistake and really made the Rattlers pay for the mental errors and penalties they committed. And to add injury to insult, UTSA-bound senior running back Terrence Wilburn did not play in his final game due to a shoulder injury that he suffered in last week’s game.
Four and outs seemed to be the theme of the night for San Marcos in the first half and they trailed 43-0 at intermission. The Rattlers started the second half with a lot more fire and passion than they exhibited in the first half, and put seven points on the board when freshman quarterback Zack Sterling capped off a long drive with a touchdown pass to wide receiver Dorian Perez. Unfortunately, those were the only points that San Marcos would score for the rest of the game and Steele went on to score once more before the final whistle.
Credit must be given to the Rattler football team as they held their heads high and remained as positive and enthusiastic as they possibly could despite not winning a game this season. They finish the season with an 0-10 record while Cibolo Steele finishes with an overall record of 8-2 and 5-0 in district play. Many things can be learned by the underclassmen on this year’s team as San Marcos will return many players for next season, including Sterling, who gained valuable experience this year leading the Rattlers on offense.
Rattler fans: 2011 can only move uphill from here.
