San Marcos High School Drops Valiant Comeback Attempt to Bastrop Bears

The San Marcos Rattlers headed into a meeting against the Bastrop Bears having only scored seven total points in their first two games this season, and the Snakes desperately needed some offensive output, especially against a team that had scored over 100 points in its last two games. However, the Bears held on in the end and took the win, 43-36.

After lighting up the scoreboard for 36 points, Rattler fans breathed a little easier as their home team came one fourth down completion away from potentially sending the Friday night slugfest into overtime. A fast-paced, back and forth first half excited fans in their seats as Bastrop clinged to a narrow 29-21 halftime lead.

The second half started out sloppy, with both teams consecutively turning the ball over to each other four times. In the fourth quarter, the Bears watched their 15-point lead evaporate after the Rattlers scored on consecutive drives and converted a game tying 2-point conversion.

All was dandy in San Marcos, but only momentarily.

The Bears answered with a quick scoring drive of their own. On the ensuing drive, the Rattlers managed to get the ball to midfield with less than two minutes on the clock, but on 4th and 13, the Bears defense stood strong and forced the turnover on downs.

For San Marcos (0-3), senior Terrance Wilburn, who began the season as the starting quarterback, again showed off his athleticism, accumulating more than 220 yards of total offense. Wilburn rushed for 171 yards on 25 carries and also caught a screen pass that ended up going 66 yards, ultimately setting up one of the Rattlers’ five touchdowns. Also involved in the Snakes’ running game were Anthony Ramirez and Dorian Perez. They rushed for 85 and 69 yards, respectively.

Earning his second start behind center, Adrian Narvaiz showed great poise in the pocket when needed, completing five of nine passes for 119 yards and one touchdown.

However, Bastrop’s (3-1) Josiah Monroe outshined his counterpart Narvaiz as he racked up just over 200 yards of total offense and threw for three touchdowns. He also ran for a 37-yard touchdown which broke the 36-36 tie late in the 4th quarter. All three of his passing scores fell into the arms of Buddy Nunn, who ended the day with 102 yards receiving on just those three receptions. Apart from Monroe, the Bears running game included 46 yards from Trae Bunton and 44 yards from Mark Jackson.

The Rattlers will look one more time to secure their first victory of the season as they host Corpus Christi Carroll on Friday, Sept. 24. This game was originally scheduled for play in Corpus Christi, but has been moved to San Marcos. Next season’s meeting between the teams will be in Corpus. Corpus Christi Carroll, has lost three straight games after winning their season opener.
