Bobcat Defense Tightens the Reigns on No. 17 Cal Poly with 21-12 Win

Texas State football took on No. 17 Cal Poly for the second straight home game of the season, winning 21-12 at Bobcat Stadium on Saturday. The match up was the first of five road games for Cal Poly, and the Bobcat defense shut down any hope for the Mustangs starting their road trip on a good note.

Texas State came out strong with a 37-yard touchdown run by Karrington Bush at the 10:54 mark of the first quarter. Team morale was high as the guys on the sidelines high fived and pumped each other up. The rest of the half was a struggle for the Mustangs thanks to the Bobcat defense, which held the score to 7-3 as both teams jogged back to their locker rooms at the half.

The second half of the match up was a tremendous showing for redshirt freshmen running back Dexter Imade. After his second field goal of the night, Mustang kicker Jake West brought the score to 7-6, but Imade came back to score his first career touchdown to put the Bobcats up by nine. Cal Poly’s Doug Shumway quieted a riled-up Bobcat crowd with a touchdown that made the game a close 14-12 contest with the entire fourth quarter still looming ahead.

Going into that fourth quarter, tensions were high but Imade made sure that any thought of Cal Poly pulling an upset came to an end as he ran a 37-yard touchdown into the end zone to seal a Bobcat victory, 21-12. The rest of the half was all about the Bobcat defense as it tightened the reins on the Mustang offense.

Texas State is now 2-1 on the season and looks forward to its next match up on Sept. 26 against Southern Utah. Kick off is set for 6:00 p.m. and can be heard live on 89.9 FM KTSW.
