Texas State came into Waco on Tuesday looking for a little payback against the Bears of Baylor. The 'Cats were coming off a winning weekend over the Lumberjacks of Stephen F. Austin, while the Bears were coming off a winning weekend as well over the Missouri Tigers. In Game 2 of this year's three-game series, Baylor put an emphatic stamp in the win column with a 12-3 victory over Texas State, adding to their 3-2 victory against the 'Cats in the QTI Classic earlier this season.
The Bears' starter for the game was Ross Speed from Westwood High in Austin, Texas, while the 'Cats countered with Brian Borski on the mound. Borski registered an impressive performance against the Aggies of Texas A&M last Tuesday, going 6 and a third, and only giving up 2 runs.
In the first inning the Bobcats scored early after a big triple by Jason Martinson scored Laurn Randell all the way from 1st base. In the Bear half of the first, Brian Borski got some good defensive help when Brooks Pinckard was picked up trying to steal by Bobcat catcher Andrew Stumph. Texas State continued to stay hot in the 2nd inning when Shaun Garcia got a base hit, advancing Jeff McVaney to third who later scored on a Andrew Stumph base hit. The Bobcats took a 2-0 lead, and also drove the Ross Speed out of the game for BU.
The 'Cats held a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the 3rd when the Bears came out and decided to play with some intensity. Baylor got on the board when Max Muncy hit a sacrifice fly to score Brooks Pinckard and make the score 2-1. Freshman Tyler Collins then smacked a base hit, scoring Joey Hainsfurther to tie the game at 2-2.
Both offenses then fell dormant until the Baylor 5th, when a pair of base hits scored 2 for the Bears in the 5th. This chased Texas State starter Brian Borski out of the game, and Coach Harrington brought in Covey Morrow to stop the bleeding. The Bobcats got one run back in the 6th, and that would be the last time they crossed home plate. Kyle Kubitza scored on a Shaun Garcia base hit, and Jeff Mcvaney was thrown out trying to score from 1st when he collided with Baylor catcher Gregg Glime.
The Bears tacked on four more runs in the sixth off a Clint Vest throwing error trying to turn a double play, as well as a single and a sacrifice fly. Baylor finally stopped scoring in the 8th after they made the score 12-3 off a pinch hit homerun by Jake Miller, and an error by third baseman Kyle Kubitza.
Errors can kill, and that seemed to be a big problem as the Cats were hit with three in the devastating loss. Texas State falls to 17-10 with the defeat, while the Bears improve to 16-10. However, with the loss came some in-game experience for some green players, as Coach Harrington used this game to get some young arms into action for his squad.
Texas State will look to rebound this weekend against a struggling Central Arkansas team. The first pitch of game one will be at 6:30 at Bobcat Field on Friday, while the Saturday and Sunday games will start at 2:00 PM and 1:00 PM, respectively. All three games will be aired on Stretch Internet at www.txstatebobcats.com.
