After a 12-1 win on Saturday’s game, the Texas State Bobcats swept the Lamar Cardinals this Sunday afternoon with a final score of 5-2. There was much anticipation on how today’s game would play out due to the inconsistency of the games before on Texas State's part. Ty Harrington mentioned that every game’s a new game regardless of the wins his team has earned before. According to him, the Bobcats should in no way have gone into Sunday’s game with their heads held up any higher, and instead go out on the field and play their hardest.
The starting pitchers were Lee Colon for the Bobcats and Eric Harrington for the Cardinals. The Bobcats may have felt intimidated batting against Eric Harrington, last year's SLC freshman of the year and All-SLC first team member. The match up against these two pitchers was well fought out for the batters. Both pitchers put up zeros in every inning until the 5th when the Cardinals finally scored 2 runs and the Bobcats scored 1 at the bottom of the inning. Unfortunately for the Cardinals, that was the first and last time they would ever put up any numbers on the scoreboard.
It wasn’t until the 7th inning that the action started to unravel. Before then, the game had been easygoing and the pitchers were in and out with their innings. Tyler Sibley walked on the batting box and hit a triple on Eric Harrington's pitch. This was the first time any player from either team had a man on the third base. This play gave Bobcat fans encouragement on a comeback. After Sibley's hit, Bret Atwood stepped on base and immediately hit a double. Lamar's Harrington was having a hard time accepting the hits he was giving up and head coach for the Cardinals came out and talked to him on the mound trying to regroup his pitcher. After their coach came out, two players for the Cardinals went out to the bullpen for warm up to relieve Harrington.
Kyle Livingstone was next on bat and hit a single right off the pitch. The crowd was going wild, this had been the most action fans had seen throughout the entire game. With the bases loaded, the Cardinals were put in a tough position. Jason Martinson got up to the plate and hit a sacrifice bunt, scoring Sibley and Atwood. Kyle Kubitza went off with a home run to the right field for the final 5-2 score of the game.
Kubitza went 3-for-4 and Atwood went 2-for-3 in today's game. The Cardinals had a pitching change after Kyle Kubitza and went to the 8th inning. Covey Morrow came in for a pitching change for the Bobcats to take out the left hander at bat for LU. After his success, Garret Carruth came in after to relieve the game and got his second save of the series.
The are now 7-2 in Southland Conference play and 14-8 overall with the sweep, while Lamar falls to 15-9, 2-7 SLC.
