Texas State Softball Earns Season-Opening Win

As the chilly winter night continued on in San Marcos, the Texas State Bobcats and the Northern Illinois Huskies took the field. This would be a game in which youth would play a factor for both teams, but in this case Texas State nabbed a season opening 3-0 win.

Before the game started one could speculate that the large amount of youth for both sides would be a factor in clutch situations. The first inning was fairly uneventful for both the Huskies and the Bobcats; even though it was the first game of the season some may have expected to see a good amount of offense. Fans saw the first hit of the game come in the second inning courtesy of Kristina Tello even if it was only a straight up the middle single. Then, the third inning showcased the pure domination of the bobcat pitcher Chandler Hall, who had a very impressive showing only giving up four hits and no runs.

The Bobcats then began to show their claws by coming up with a run in the fourth. Anna Hernandez started the rally with a seeing-eye single that was just out of the reach of the Huskies’ infielders. Later that inning, Hernandez came around to score, giving the Bobcats the 1-0 lead. It seemed like the same old song and dance for the Huskies in the fifth inning. They would get a lot of momentum going, then the Bobcat defense would rear its head and completely shut down the huskies. "The force" was with the bobcats as they scored another run in the sixth after some very interesting coaching moves by head coach Ricci Woodard that included a double steal. Chandler Hall continued her pitching dominance into the sixth by giving the huskies the old three up, three down routine that included two strikeouts. Texas State went on to win the game 3-0 in very impressive fashion. The youth and the amazingly sound defense of the bobcats were too much for the Northern Illinois Huskies to handle.

Texas State will continue play in the Century Tel Tournament tomorrow against Oklahoma State at 2:30 pm and New Mexico at 5 pm. The Bobcats were slated to take on the Lobos on Friday, but had their game canceled due to inclement weather. You can listen to both games on Stretch Internet on www.txstatebobcats.com.
