Men's Basketball Suffers Heartbreaker at Buzzer
In men’s basketball action on Saturday, the Bobcats lost a hard fought game against the Nicholls State Colonels 66-63.
Despite shooting a little better than 30 percent from the field, the Bobcats managed to stay with colonels throughout the whole game. Nicholls State jumped out to a quick lead right out of the gate, catching the bobcats off guard. The Colonels took advantage of every opportunity they got to try and put the game away. It seemed as though the Bobcats could never build up any momentum or get their swagger going in the first half. The Bobcats only led the colonels at halftime 25-23 as a result.
However, perhaps the thing that everyone will be talking about after that game was the last few minutes of the game. Nicholls State hit two crucial three pointers, one of them being the game winner. Nicholls hit those shots after Texas State rallied to take the lead late in the game. In those very crucial moments, a controversial call was made on Ryan White that could have sealed the deal for the Bobcats. White sunk a two-pointer but was called for an offensive foul; immediately giving possession back to the colonels. Without hesitation Nicholls State drove the ball up the court, breaking through the three quarter press of the bobcat defense. Chris Iles found Bryson Triggs on the right wing. Triggs nailed the three pointer with no time left, giving the Colonels the victory over the downtrodden bobcats.
Listening to the postgame show, coach Doug Davalos didn’t say much. He really didn’t have to, as we all knew how he felt. This game goes to show that in the sport basketball, anything can happen. However, Coach Davalos would probably also tell you that having over 20 turnovers and a very low shooting percentage doesn’t help you get a win on the road either. With this loss, Texas State falls to 12-14 overall and 6-6 in the Southland Conference. If the Bobcats want to make a run in the SLC tourney, they’re going to have to lower the turnovers and play smarter basketball. Their next outing will be against Stephen F. Austin on Wednesday night at 7 pm. You can listen live on Stretch Internet at txstatebobcats.com.
