Bobcat Weekend Update: Monday, February 22nd
The Texas State Baseball team scored a huge series win over the homestanding Houston Cougars from Friday to Sunday. A 6-0 shutout victory on Friday for the Bobcats was led by pitcher Michael Russo, and the win helped to set the tone for the rest of the weekend. Texas State then shut down UH 6-3 on Saturday and held on despite a late Cougar rally on Sunday to sweep the series with a 9-7 triumph. The undefeated Bobcats will face Rice tomorrow at 6:30 PM, and the KTSW Sports Blog will have expanded coverage of the game by play-by-play commentator Will McGinnis. You can also listen to the game live on 89.9 FM KTSW, ktsw.net and txstatebobcats.com
Bobcat softball continued to have a bit of a rough start to their 2010 campaign, as they went 1-3 in the Littlewood Classic on Friday and Saturday in Tempe, Arizona. Texas State continued their two-game slide as they lost consecutive decisions to Iowa and Illinois State by scores of 4-1 and 10-4, respectively. The 'Cats were able to stop their 6-game losing streak with a 6-1 pounding of Rutgers on Saturday, however. Texas State then played the 5th-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils tough through six innings, until ASU broke a 2-2 tie with four runs in the top of the 6th. Their next scheduled game, a rubber match against Illinois State that Sunday, was washed out by rain. Texas State is now 2-6 on the season and will travel to Tulsa, OK to participate in the Embassy Suites Tulsa Invitational this weekend. They will face UMKC, South Dakota State, Creighton, UMKC once again, and Tulsa, in that order.
Texas State men's golf is currently playing host to the JL Lewis Invitational up in Bastrop, where they will square off against Rice, Houston, North Texas, Oral Roberts, Houston Baptist, and Southland Conference rivals Central Arkansas, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, UTSA, and UT-Arlington. The tournament will conclude tomorrow afternoon.
