Bobcats Destroyed by Lady Bears in Waco

The Texas State women's basketball team traveled to Waco to take on the #5 ranked Baylor Bears. The Bears, lead by sensational freshman Brittney Griner, defeated the Bobcats 99-18.

Griner dunked the ball twice in a game that was full of historical notes for the record books. Unfortunately for the Bobcats, many of those school records were all-time lows in several offensive categories. A total of seven school records were broken on the evening: Lowest amount of points in a half (5), lowest amount of points scored in a game (18), fewest field goals made (5), lowest field goal percentage in a game (9.3%), fewest rebounds in a game (19), fewest assists in a game (2), and, most painfully, the largest margin of defeat (81 points).

The Lady Bears were led by a National Player of the Year candidate in Griner who had 26 points and 8 rebounds. Griner also become only the second women's collegiate basketball player to dunk the ball twice in the same game and also broke the school record for career blocks, all in this just her first year in college. It was also a historic night for Baylor head coach Kim Mulkey who recorded her 250th career win.

The Bobcats had only five points on 2 for 32 shooting at halftime. Texas State also just missed the NCAA Division I records for fewest points scored in a half and game. Savannah State scored three points in the first half against Florida State on Nov. 23, 2003, and Texas Southern scored 16 points against TCU on Dec. 30, 2002 to set the mark for a game involving two Division I schools. While we're piling on the bad news for Texas State, starting point guard Victoria Davis checked out of the game with an injured foot. She was unable to put any pressure on her right foot throughout the game and during the bus ride back home, and was later seen on crutches. It is unknown whether she will be active for the start of Southland Conference play or not.

Offensively the Bobcats were led by Diamond Ford with 7 points. The Bobcats are back in action on January 9th against UT Arlington at Strahan Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
