The Texas State women's tennis team was defeated Saturday by the Mean Green of North Texas. The Cats lost 5-2 overall to the women of North Texas. The Bobcats' highlight of the day was Senior Ashley Ellis who made her record 6-0 for the weekend.
The day started out as Texas State was defeated in doubles play in two out of the three matches. The doubles team of Nyssa Peele and Ashley Ellis did keep their winning streak alive as they improved to 3-0 for the weekend.
In singles the Bobcats had their hands full with tough opponents from the UNT squad. In the number one match Andrea Giraldo was defeated 1-6 and 0-6 in a tough match. In the four match Senior Lainy Chafitz who had been on fire all weekend lost in 3 sets after losing the first set and rallying back to take the match to 3 sets.
Senior Ashley Ellis started her singles match very strong with a 6-3 victory in the 1st set. Ellis stumbled in the second allowing her opponent to get back in the set after she was up five games to two. Ellis though proved her veteran experience as she regrouped and took the match 7-6 after winning 7-3 in a tiebreak.
Kiki Kruse who had a great day in singles play as she put on a great showing defeating her opponent 6-4 and 6-3 in two sets. Mackenzie Farmer also had a tough day as she lost to a strong UNT opponent.
Overall the Bobcats had a great weekend home stand going 2-1 and improving their overall record this spring to 3-2. Texas State now looks ahead to conference play as well as hosting Trinity University next Saturday, February 21, 2009.
