Rattlers Lose Again, Record at 0-9

Senior day for the San Marcos Rattlers was spoiled this past Friday thanks to the visiting Judson Rockets. The Rockets (6-3, 3-1) crushed the winless Snakes 54-7 after losing to Cibolo Steele 25-24 in a double overtime thriller just one week prior.

The Rattlers’ (0-9, 0-4) offense deflated early, as freshman quarterback Zach Sterling was picked off on the opening possession. The Rockets took the interception to the house and led 7-0 without their offense even touching the field. Judson scored twice more before the first quarter ended. By halftime, the Rattlers found themselves on the short end of a 47-0 score.

The Rockets’ second and third stringers played the majority of the second half and were able to alleviate any sign of a Rattler comeback. San Marcos was able to put together a solid drive late in the third quarter, however, as Anthony Ramirez capped off the productive drive with a 1-yd touchdown run, providing the only points for the Rattlers.

Ramirez led the way on the ground for San Marcos, picking up 74 total rushing yards. Terrance Wilburn, one of the 22 seniors honored during a pregame ceremony, tacked on 39 rushing yards of his own. Ramirez also led the Rattlers on defense, totaling nine tackles.

For the Rockets, there was plenty of offensive wealth to go around. Two of Judson’s touchdowns came from the defense as they forced four total interceptions. Quaylon Jones led the way on the ground, slashing and dashing the Rattlers defense for the entire first half as he scored on multiple occasions. The second string offense found the end zone only once in the second half, but was able to drain the clock for a speedy final two quarters.

The 0-9 Rattlers will finish the season on the road against the Cibolo Steele Knights (7-2, 4-0), the top dog in District. San Marcos will have one final shot to erase the goose egg in the win column, but will have to do so against a Knights team that’s won six in-a-row and is led by future Texas Longhorn Malcolm Brown.

Kick-off is at 7:30 and can be heard live on 89.9 KTSW.
