Rattlers Fall Short Once Again in District Play

San Marcos High School (0-8) had high hopes before heading into Friday’s match-up against the Seguin High School Matadors (2-6), but lost 35-7 in Seguin. San Marcos’ only win last season was agianst Seguin, and the Rattlers may have missed out on their final chance to take home a victory this season, as the first and second place teams in District 25-5A are their final two opponents this fall.

The game started with a promising bang with a Rattler’s touchdownon on the opening kickoff, which was their first game-lead of the season. Unfortunately, they were the only points San Marcos would put on the board, as their offense was silenced for the remainder of the game. With their quarterback standing 6’4’’, an offensive lineman towering at 6’ 7’’ and the rest of the o-line sitting pretty at over 6’2’’, Seguin’s offense was a tyrant, and the Rattler defense was unable to apply any pressure.

Seguin was also winless in District going into the game on Friday, but quarterback Brig Gerlich countered the Rattler’s early 7-0 lead with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Ty Miles on their first possession. On their next carry, San Marcos gave up the ball and set up the Matadors’ second touchdown, and after converting a two-point conversion, the score was 15-7 going
into the second quarter. This was one of four turnovers the Rattlers would give up during the game. The rest of the first half was much of the same story as Seguin put up two more touchdowns before heading into the half-time break with a 28-7 lead.

The second half was a bit more positive for the Rattler defense as they only gave up one more touchdown in the second half, but the offense was never able to recover, and their first touchdown ended up being their only one. Seguin definitely took advantage of Rattler mistakes and the Rattlers learned mistakes like those can and will lead to points against them.

The Rattlers tallied a total of 245 offensive yards and went deep into Seguin territory numerous times, but fell short on each occasion. The Rattlers punted twice and gave up the ball four times on turnovers. Freshman quarterback Zach Sterling started under center but Junior Adrian Narvaiz also took a few snaps during the game. San Marcos plays again against Converse-Judson on Friday, Oct. 29 at Bobcat Stadium. Kick off is at 7:30 P.M.
