The San Marcos High School Football team came into the season with hopes of returning to their former 5 form when they reached the playoffs three different years. On Friday night at Bobcat Stadium, it was evident that they still had a long way to go. The Rattlers lost their first game of the season to the Marble Falls Mustangs by a score of 42-0.
Turnovers and sloppy play turned what could have been a potential upset into what could be called a "learning experience." Two lost fumbles and three interceptions, coupled with Marbles Falls' offensive passing attack made it a long night for the Rattlers. The game started slow, with the score being only 7-0 after the first quarter of play. Then the talented combination of Marbles Falls quarterback Zed Warner and 6-4" wide receiver David Morgan began to tear through the San Marcos secondary. Warner ended the contest by going 9-10 for 239 yards with 4 touchdowns, 3 of those scores and 157 yards were to his favorite target, Morgan.
After the slow 7-0 start to the first quarter, the Mustangs began rolling in the second. Marble Falls took a commanding 35-0 halftime lead to the locker room. Once the game was safely in hand for the Mustangs, the Rattler defense did perform better; holding Marble Falls to a single touchdown in the second half. Offensively the Rattlers struggled as well, managing only 104 yards rushing in their run-based wing-T offense. Newly transformed quarterback Terrance Wilburn lead the team in rushing with 35 yards on 12 carries.
The best part of the Marble Falls game for the Rattlers is that it's over, and that they have they weeks to prepare for their next opponent thanks to an early bye week.
