With the regular series coming to a close, the Bobcat Softball team looked to take the final game of a crucial series against the Northwestern State Demons. This game was the senior presentation for four ladies who have excelled on and off the field. Seniors Leah Boatright, Elizabeth Dennis, Lacey Duncan, and Kristina Tello entered the field for their last time wearing maroon and yellow in San Marcos. With the sun shining and not a cloud in the sky, these four senior ladies played a game worth telling for the rest of their lives in a 7-1 victory.
A crowd of nearly 500 loyal Bobcat and Demon fans filed in to watch the hot arm of Sophomore Chandler Hall taking the circle at the noon first pitch. Hall entered the game with not only the best ERA for the Texas State, but held the mark of strikeout leader for the SLC. Taking the circle for the Northwestern State Demons was Kelee Grimes with an impressive ERA of 3.12 and a 5-6 record to her name. Hall fell victim right away to the win hungry Demons by giving up a run from an Ashlee England RBI single to center field in the first inning. After giving a run, Hall was determined to keep the opposing Demons to just one run as she concluded by striking out the next two batters. The Bobcats knew they had to answer back to this early lead put on by Northwestern State. After beginning the inning with two outs, Haley Lemons and McKenzie Baack were both walked to put runners on first and second. Jenna Emery carded her fourth homer of the season when she bombed a high rising fastball to left field. Leah Boatright was next to add to the damage after a solo home run to the exact same spot as Jenna Emery had previously done, putting Texas State up 4-1. Second baseman Anna Hernandez was next up to bat. Hernandez drilled a high fly ball to again the same spot as Emery and Boatright had previously done. However, this ball was about a foot too short and Hernandez was tagged out at second to wrap up the inning.
The Bobcats continued to put runs on the scoreboard when Emery recorded her fourth RBI of the day off of a single down the first base line to advance McKenzie Baack home. Texas State added two more runs in the fourth inning to secure a 7-1 lead. Chandler Hall continued to show why she was the most dominating pitcher in the SLC by fanning five total batters in the contest. Senior Elizabeth Dennis secured the win for Texas State after coming into the 5th inning. Dennis struck out two batters and lowered her ERA to 4.99 on her last home appearance. Texas State batted .320 to Northwestern State's .240. Shortstop Lindsay Matt was 2-for-2 from the plate, including a triple in the second inning. Emery finished 2-for-3 with four RBI and one run scored. Also batting well for the Bobcats was pitcher Chandler Hall who recorded two RBIs on the day while going 1-for-3. Overall every aspect of the Bobcats game was drawn to perfection. It wasn't just dominating pitching this time that secured the team its nineteenth Southland win this season, but it was also excellent work at the plate.
The Bobcats will wrap up their season this weekend against their bitter rivals, the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks. There will be a doubleheader played this Saturday with the first game beginning at 1 pm in Nacogdoches. The final game of the series and regular season will be Sunday May 9th at noon. This series is extremely important for the Softball due to the fact that they only have a one game lead on the Lumberjacks. You can go to sfajacks.com for live stats or twitter.com/txstatebobcats.
