After suffering a tough loss in game 1 of Saturday’s double-header vs. Northwestern State, the Bobcats were reunited in the second game of the double-header with what kept them atop the Southland Conference all season: Their Bats. In the 7 losses of the previous 8 games, Texas State had amassed only 4 total runs. In the 5th inning of Game 2 on Saturday, the Bobcats batted around the order and thwarted the Lady Demon pitching for 5 runs.
A 6-1 lead heading into the top of the 7th had Texas State all but ready to pack it up and call it a day. Northwestern State had other plans.
After winning the first game on Saturday 1-0, the Lady Demons found themselves a base hit away from possibly stealing the victory in Game 2. Three outs away from a Bobcat victory, relieve pitcher Libby Dennis gave up a 2-run shot to Freshman pinch-hitter Kylie Roos. Before anyone knew it, the score had dwindled to 6-4 and the Lady Demons were sitting comfortable with 2 on and still no one out.
So, where did Coach Woodard turn to close out the win? She stepped out of the dugout, headed to the circle for a visitation and just as she hit the 3rd base line, looked into left field where pitcher Chandler Hall had been playing (and playing well) all game and gave her the Bobcat Ace the signal to come in and close it out.
After a walk loaded the bases, Hall kept her composure, struck out the next batter, and then started the game ending 1-2-3 double play.
Haley Lemons went 3-4 and scored once. Jenna Emery added 2 more hits, 2 RBI’s, and also scored once. Chandler Hall proved she can do it all, going 1-4. Might not seem like much, but her sole hit was a 2-run double that started the monstrous 5th inning for the ‘Cats.
Freshman Anne Marie Taylor started in the circle for the Bobcats and went a solid 4.2 innings with no earned runs while striking out three. Libby Dennis (2-5) picked up the win for Texas State.
For the Lady Demons, apart from Kylie Roos’ 2-run blast in the 7th, Taywanee Edmonds and Kayla Cole provided their efforts, as Edmonds went 2-3 and Cole went 1-3 with an RBI. Samantha Roberts entered the weekend with 5 homeruns and 33 RBI’s. The Bobcat pitching held her to 0-5 in the two Saturday games. Tagged with the loss was Brooke Boening (8-8). She was relieved after allowing 5 runs on 8 hits.
After Sunday’s series-deciding Game 3, the Bobcats will finish off the season on the road, as they’ll take on Stephen F. Austin. Depending on how this weekend finishes, the winner of next week’s series will be crowned regular season Southland Conference Champs.
