Baseball Takes Two of Three From Islanders
The Bobcats won the series 2-1 this past weekend against their Southland opponent Texas A&M - Corpus Christi Islanders. After a 10-8 loss on Saturday, the Bobcats came back and wrapped up the first conference series of the season with a winning score of 13-8.
Coach Ty Harrington had Lee Colon come into Sunday’s game as the starting pitcher for the first time in this year’s season. Colon is a Junior transfer from Temple College and helped the Leopards to a 47-15 overall record and went 11-0 on the mound with a 1.5 ERA. Brian Borski had been the starter for the Sunday pitching line up last season and coming into this season, but there was much potential for Junior pitcher Lee Colon.
Andrew Stumph #30 was a double shy of hitting for the cycle and lead the 18-hit outing from the Bobcats going 4-5 in the game. The Bobcats nearly matched the team's past two games combined at the plate, leading to a 13-8 win over the Islanders to win the first Southland Conference series of the season Sunday afternoon at Bobcat Field.
Texas State started the game off strong scoring six runs in the first innings, and never looked back. The islanders fought back throughout the game, but every time they scored the Bobcats would respond with runs of their own. One big part of the Texas State offense tonight was the long ball. Home runs by Andrew Stumph and Jason Martinson capped off the barrage of hits by the bobcats. The game ended tense after Corpus Christi scored three in the top of the 9th to bring the score to 13-8 but Texas State called on pitcher Carson smith to close out the game. He did successfully recording three straight outs to end the game after being called in.
The Bobcats will travel to The University of Texas in Austin who are ranked 3rd in the nation this Tuesday at 6:05 p.m. for a non-conference play. The Cats will then come back to Bobcat Stadium on the Friday the 12th and play against Penn State in a three-game series that will span the weekend. You can listen to all four games on 89.9 KTSW, ktsw.net and txstatebobcats.com.
