Dennis Franchione: 13-9 record as the head coach at what was then SWT from 1990-91. Head coach at TCU, 1998-2001; really got things rolling at what was a then-WAC team; recruited/coached the likes of LaDainian Tomlinson and had two defenses that ranked number one in the country in back-to-back years; went on to have overall unsuccessful stints at Alabama and Texas A&M. Currently works for ESPN Radio (but is ready to get back into coaching).
Bobby Jack Wright: Currently a defensive coach at Oklahoma (officially, the job is listed as "co-defensive coordinator"). Texas native, (Mission, Texas, same as Tom Landry) coaching stints at UNT and UT under John Machovic. Former player at SWT.
Tim Brewster: All-Conference player at Illinois; short playing stiny in the NFL; coaching career of 13 years, spent under Mack Brown at UNC and at UT (was a recruiting coordinator, helped recruit Vince Young, among other great Longhorn classes); moved to the NFL where he coached Tight Ends such as Antonio Gates, Tony Scheffler and Stephen Alexander; after coaching Tight Ends in the NFL, got the head coaching job at the University of Minnesota (1-11 season that included losses to North Dakota State and Florida Atlantic).
Greg Davis: Long-time offensive coordinator under Mack Brown at UT. Ran the spread offense for several years, with great success. Bad year this year, lack of production, got fired recently... You know the story.
*Coach Fran
Pros: Not only Texas ties but Texas State ties. Athletic Director Dr. Larry Teis has already shown he likes to hire form within (such as former head coach Brad Wright) and Fran is the closest to that status. Had tremendous success at TCU; got that program rolling into the national powerhouse it is today. His son, Brad Franchione, is the head coach at the highly successful powerhouse Blinn Junior College, and Papa Franchione would most likely bring him in as his defensive coordinator. Cons: Unsuccessful at A&M and Alabama. Also will be 61 years old by the time he gets on campus; by no means is this too old, but he's definitely not a spring chicken anymore.
*Bobby Jack Wright
Pros: Originally hired by by current head coach Bob Stoops to recruit the state of Texas; did a pretty good job of that. Also, you have to think that over the years, some of Stoops' wisdom sunk in through osmosis or something... Former Bobcat player. Cons: My main concern - how much control of the defense at OU did he ACTUALLY have while he was "co-defensive coordinator"? Everybody knows that if Bob Stoops wants a certain defense run at a certain time, then it will happen. If not, then Brent Venables called everything else, and I highly doubt that when game day rolled, around Wright had anything at all to do with the OU defense.
*Tim Brewster
Pros: Younger (50) coach who has already been a successful position coach in the NFL. Also coached under Mack Brown for several years (again, you have to think that even through osmosis, maybe some of Mack's Magic rubbed off on him, too). Originally signed a five-year, $400,000 (along with various bonuses that could have earned him up to about $600,000) contract with Minnesota - so he's in Texas State's price range. Bounced back form the initial 1-11 season to go 7-6 and make a bowl game. Cons: Went 1-11 first season with Minnesota, with losses to South Dakota and Florida Atlantic, teams that Texas State should beat. Recruiting ability, especially in a place like San Marcos, Texas may be in question.
*Greg Davis
Pros: A proven winner with a couple Big 12 titles and 2005 National Title to his name. Multiple NFL first-rounders on offense while at Texas; has great name recognition (something that many Bobcat fans are looking for while searching for a new head coach). Cons: Is there even a realistic chance of him coming here? Maybe. Chip Brown of oranglebloods.com (who is almost never wrong) reported yesterday that Davis is interested in coming to Texas State. Chances are he could possibly make more money being an offensive coordinator somewhere else, and I doubt he would want to stay so close to Austin (he's been mentioned at Clemson as well)... Oh yeah, and the Longhorns' offense last season was TERRIBLE. Let's not forget that.
Franchione: Love the Texas State ties and never thought he was a good fit for A&M or 'Bama. Those two places take a special kind of coach, but I think he could fit right in here in laid-back San Marcos.
Wright: Believed to be a great recruiter, which would be huge considering Dr. Teis has said that he doesn't plan on even beginning interviews until early January; extremely tough on this year's recruiting class. Don't think highly of the work he's done while at OU, considering, in reality, he was at least third in line for actually calling the defensive plays.
Brewster: I like the NFL experience. I like that he's younger than other coaches. I like the head coaching experience. I don't like his Northern roots, and I don't like the fact that he just got done being fired in the middle of a 1-6 start to this season.
Davis: I like the numbers he put up offensively every season (this season being the exception). Obvious, State of Texas recruiting ties, especially to the crucial Central Texas area. But I don't think he's a realistic candidate, and I don't think he's the right man for the job.
All things considered (drum roll please!) My personal choice for the next head coach for the Texas State University football team is... Tim Brewster.
