Bobcats Tame Lady Lions For First SLC Victory

It has been a long season for the Texas State women’s basketball team. The team had lost eight straight games and six straight conference games, so coming into this game the Bobcats badly needed a victory. However, it was not going to easy because the Southeastern Louisiana Lady Lions were coming to Strahan for a big midseason match up.

The beginning of the game started like most of the games the Bobcats have played this year: the defense was great, but the offense was horrible. Texas State came out of the gates with a lot of energy on defens,e holding Southeastern Louisiana to 24 percent shooting for the half. Lacey Klause had five blocks, passing her average of 1 per game. However, Texas State only shot 32 percent from the field, and was shooting about 26% for the first ten minutes of the half. Once Texas State settled down in the game they played better and ran their offense efficiently. In fact, the Bobcats went ten minutes without committing a turnover. As a result of their improved play, the 'Cats went into the half leading 21-19.

In the second half it was the Chika Ofoegbu show. Texas State outscored Southeastern Louisiana 32 to 25 points. Southeastern made a late run to get within four points in the game, but this time the Bobcats were not going to lose and great defensive play made sure that was the case. Case in point: Southeastern shot a dismal 27 percent for the game. Chika finished with ten points and ten boards, and Lacey chipped in with two points and five boards and five blocks. Both players dominated the paint and made it very hard for the Lady Lions' Zevy Ivory (as well as the other SLU players) to get anything going. Texas State won the game cause of their defense and control of the paint.

Texas State improves to 5-14 overall and 1-7 in Southland conference play. They also got their badly needed first win against a Division 1 opponent. The 'Cats travel to Jennings, Louisiana on Saturday to take on McNeese State Cowgirls. Tip off is at 4pm, tou can catch the game live on 89.9 FM KTSW and ktsw.net.
