Bobcats Collapse in 7th Inning Against UT-Arlington
With their record at 1-3 following a second defeat from Oklahoma State in the Century Link Classic Tournament this past weekend, the Bobcats suffered another loss to their Southland Conference rivals against University of Texas- Arlington Mavericks in a 10-7 decision.
This game definitely was a confidence booster for Texas State in comparison to their previous losses in the opening frames. To try to be a little more strategic, coach Woodard took a different approach and started freshman Anne Marie Taylor as pitcher. She did a respectable job while keeping her pitches and throws consistent for the Bobcat defense. She did not bat in this game, since Coach Woodard was likely trying to save her energy for the mound. She pitched 6 out of the seven total innings.
Big hitters for the 'Cats included Leah Boatright, Kristina Tello, and Haley Lemmons with all of them scoring 2 runs a piece. Texas State began to pick it up in the bottom of the third inning staring with Lindsay Matt as the batter. She started off with a single in what would be four runs put up by the 'Cat bats in that inning. UTA was quiet during the 5th and 6th innings but they were not going down and out. The Bobcats were in the lead 7-3 until the Mavericks pulled a total of 7 runs in the last inning, causing them to seal the win over Texas State. Their big players included Hulme, Lyles, and Chumcahl. The Texas State pitching rotation could not hold the line in that last inning, as Coach Woodard had to use three pitchers to get to the bottom of the 7th. Taylor and Elizabeth Dennis were brought out and quickly benched after they gave up 3 runs apiece, then Chandler Hall finally stopped the bleeding after giving up a run.
After that devastating loss, Texas State now stands at 1-4 for the season. However, this game counts as a non-conference game and will not count against the 'Cats in the SLC standings. Texas State will host UTA once again for the beginning of the SLC play March 2 at 4:00pm. You can listen to the Bobcat-Maverick doubleheader live on 89.9 FM KTSW and online at ktsw.net.
