Bobcat Women Left Stranded By Islanders in Strahan

After falling to the McNeese State Cowgirls on the road last Saturday, the Bobcats were looking forward to coming home and getting their second win in conference play on Boko’s birthday. However, Texas State would have to beat the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi Islanders, who were ranked number two in the division. Despite another tough effort, the Bobcats would fall short once again in a 72-59 loss.

The game started out with both teams running up and down the court rapidly. The Islanders came out with the mindset that every shot was a good shot. As a result, TAMU-CC ended up shooting 7 for 39 in the first half, yet only trailed by 2 at intermission. Texas State had their usual offensive struggles by shooting 33% from the field and turning over the ball 11 times. The Bobcats also allowed the Islanders to grab 16 offensive rebounds. Texas State went into the half leading 29 to 27.

In the second half, the Islanders started out playing 2-3 zone defense. This defense limited the Bobcats in possessions and forced inexcusable turnovers. Texas State continued to struggle against the zone most of the game, but at times found ways to beat it. Diamond Ford led the charge by using her skills of driving and shooting 3’s, which lead to her scoring a game high of 22 points. The game continued to shift back and forth, but the Islanders were able to get Jade Davis going, and the team fed off her. Texas State continued to struggle, only shooting 33% from the field and turning over the ball 17 times. However, the Islanders only shot a staggering 18% from field goal range. Yes, it’s hard to believe they shot so terribly and still won the game. One of the main reasons the Islanders won was because they were able to gather 26 offensive rebounds, which led to 22 second chance points. This game ended up looking eerily familiar to the box score from the McNeese loss last Saturday. Texas State ended up falling to the Islanders with a final score of 72 to 59.

The Bobcats drop their record to 5-16 overall and 1-9 in conference play. Texas State will travel to Beaumont to take on the Lamar Lady Cardinals on Saturday, who currently sit on top of the SLC. Tip off is at 2:05 pm, and you can catch the call on 89.9 KTSW and ktsw.net starting at 1:50.
