Bearkats Crush Texas State Men in Huntsville

The Texas State Bobcats men's basketball team traveled to Huntsville to take on a very talented Sam Houston State team on Wednesday night and were outplayed almost the entire game. The Bearkats improved to 3-0 in conference play and 11-5 overall, meanwhile the Bobcats are on a downward trend falling to 2-2 in conference play and 8-10 overall.

Texas State's defense had no answer for the Bearkats powerful guard duo of Corey Almond and Ashton Mitchell. Almond and Mitchell combined for 41 points and Antuan Bootle and Preston Brown added 12 points each to help the Bearkats almost reach the century mark. Leading the way offensively for the Bobcats was guard Ryan White with 15 points. Senior forward Emmanuel Bidias A' Moute had 12 points and junior guard Tony Bishop logged a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

Early in the game the two teams seemed very evenly matched. With the help of a Sam Houston State technical foul the Bobcats' John Rybak hit two free throws to make the Bearkcat lead only 11-9 with 14 minutes to go in the first half. The Bobcats used the momentum from the technical foul to go on a run that lasted about five minutes, leading 22-16 with 8:43 left in the half. After that the Bearkats seemed to have no problem with the Bobcat defense, they dominated the rest of the half closing it out on a 27-9 run.

The Bobcats did manage to cut the lead to only six in the second half, but Sam Houston State repeatedly made play after play at crucial times to keep the Bobcats out of reach. The Bearkat depth and different scoring options became too much for the Bobcats as they eventually lost by 31 points.

Texas State returns to action Saturday, January 24th as they travel to Lamar. That game is set to tip off at 7:00 p.m. and you can here it right here on KTSW 89.9, ktsw.net and txstatebobcats.com.
