Bearkats Take Game One in Double-Header

A
fter the cancellation of Fridays game due to the weather, Texas State
hosted the Bearkats of Sam Houston State for a double-header on Saturday.

Game one started off with scoring on both sides; Sam Houston got on the board first with a sac fly to deep center to bring in a run and to take the lead by a score of 1-0. The Bobcats answered right back when Texas State first baseman Paul Goldschmidt blasted a Jacob Howard fastball to deep left field for a solo homerun.

The action picked back up in the third when Bearkat Seth Hammock doubled to bring in 2 runs for Sam Houston. But Texas State answered once again when Ty Sibley led off with a single. Then Bret Atwood layed a beautiful bunt down the third baseline to advance the runner and beat out the throw to first as well. Goldschmidt came to the plate next but was walked to load the bases. Keith Prestridge hit a deep sacrifice fly to bring in Sibley from third.

In a bizarre moment of confusion, Atwood found himself in a pickle along the thirdbase line, but SHSU pitcher Jacob Howard bobbled the throw and Atwood came in to take the lead by a score of 4-3. The next 3 innings were a pitching and defensive battle. After 7 runs were scored in the first 3 innings by both squads, Sam and Texas State exchanged a handful of "1-2-3" innings.

Bobcat Bret Atwood reached base on a walk in the seventh with only one out. Slugger Goldschmidt padded the lead when he doubled down the right-field line to bring Atwood in. But the eighth inning is when it all fell apart for Texas State. Starting pitch Zach Tritz found himself in a hole when a fielders-choice grounder advanced Bearkat runners to second and third base. Head coach Ty Harrington saw enough of Tritz to bring in reliever Tyler Brundridge. On Brundridge's first pitch, Sam Houston catcher Mark Wyatt swung and sent the ball over the left-field wall with a three-run homer.

Down by a score of 7-5, Texas State had it's last chance to mount a comeback. Pinch hitter Kyle Kubitza walked to start the inning off right. Next batter was right fielder Laurn Randell who struck-out. Sibley and Atwood both had singles to load the bases with big Paul "Bunyon" Goldshmidt at the plate.

However, Goldschmidt popped up to second base for the secon out. With 2 outs and the bases loaded, designated hitter Kieth Prestridge popped up to left field to end the game.

The final score was 7-5 for the visiting Sam Houston Bearkats. Luckily for the Bobcats, it was a double-header and could still have revenge for the day.....
