The Texas State Women’s Basketball team scraped their way to a 70-58 road victory in Thibodaux, LA over the Nicholls State Lady Colonels.
The Bobcats were a bit sluggish in the first few minutes of the ball game but quickly regrouped and set the tone and a season record, limiting their opponents to a mere total of 15 points at the closing of the first half.
At the start of the second half, Nicholls went on a 15-5 run over Texas State but could not manage to take the lead. While the Colonels never backed down, leading scorers Ashley Cole, 16 points, and Gabriell Mattox, 14 points and nine rebounds, propelled the Bobcats to victory.
“This game today is the most important game on our schedule,” said head coach Suzanne Fox.
Though the Bobcats surrendered their lead over the Colonels only once, both teams were evenly matched in the areas of points in the paint, points off turnovers and fast break points. So what was the x-factor for the Bobcat’s victory? Bench points.
The Bobcat bench was on fire and scored 30 points, almost half the team’s total points, and outscored Nicholls bench by 19. They definitely played a huge role in the team’s stellar 49 percent field goal shooting.
The basketball team only has four games remaining, and this road win, the second of the season, will hopefully give them momentum. The Bobcats needed this win according to head coach Suzanne Fox. Today, she got her wish.
